Area Information

Located at approx. 3,700' elevation on the Eastern Continental Divide in the Southwestern Blue Ridge Mountains, Cashiers and Sapphire is a goldmine of fascinating wonders to see with scores of things to do! Though you can breeze through the towns' only traffic light at the Crossroads in about two minutes, there is more here than meets the eye.

More than 20,000 acres in the surrounding Nantahala National Forest provide opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, boating, bird watching, and other outdoor activities. The area boasts more than two dozen waterfalls and numerous hiking trails. Soaring around 5,000 feet, the tallest mountains surrounding Cashiers are as dramatic as the waterfalls! Be sure to check out Bald Rock! Lake Glenville, also know as Lake Thorpe, is located in Glenville just four miles north of Cashiers on Highway 107. It is a 1,462 acre lake with 26 miles of shoreline.

Fishing licenses can be obtained at Signal Ridge Marina. Some of the best trout fishing in the country can be found right here in Sapphire and the surrounding areas! Both the Horsepasture River and the Tuckasegee River offer outstanding trout streams.

Each season offers dozens of options for a memorable stay, all with incredible scenery. In winter, enjoy three ski slopes and a new snow boarding run. In spring and summer, the woodlands come alive and offer cool breezes and much needed relief from the high temperatures. The fall is simply magnificent with its brilliant change of colors!

Unlimited backpacking and picnicking can be enjoyed in the nearby Pisgah National Forest near Brevard with its famous sliding rock. Giant exposed boulders loom in the landscape, their rounded shoulders touching the sky. Whiteside Mountain (elevation 4,930 feet), accessible from Highway 64 west towards Highlands, has the highest sheer cliffs in Eastern America. Visit the newly opened Gorges State Park, as well as The Dupont State Forest.

Whether your interest is golf, tennis, shopping, fishing, boating, bird watching, or antiquing, you will find the area an ideal vacation spot. It is definitely a place where you can slow down the pace to experience and enjoy all the area has to offer.

Waterfalls

These area falls are quite spectacular! Make a day of it and see them all! Remember to bring cameras and/or video equipment. Wear comfortable shoes, a bathing suit, and pack a picnic! (Take along info for falls available in the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory provided.)
Waterfalls

Whitewater Falls - This 411 foot waterfall is higher than Niagra Falls and is the highest in the eastern United States. Take 64 East towards Lake Toxaway and turn right on Hwy. 281. Follow the signs to the falls on your left.

Rainbow Falls,Turtle Falls, & Drift Falls - These beautiful falls are located on the Horsepasture River off Hwy. 281 about 7 miles past Whitewater Falls. The hike to these falls is relatively moderate.

Toxaway Falls
- This waterfall is located on Hwy. 64 East, 14 miles from Cashiers. The highway passes over the falls which cascades approximately 123 feet.

Hurricane Falls
- This waterfall empties into Lake Glenville. Take Hwy. 107 North from Cashiers 1.5 miles, then turn left into the Norton Community and pass Blue Ridge School. Almost immediately on the right will be a pull off area where you can view the waterfall. Hiking down to this fall is not advised.

Cashier’s Sliding Rock
- Nature's own water slide on the Chattooga River is perfect for children! Located 1.5 miles down Hwy. 107 South on Whiteside Cove Road. Turn right onto Whiteside Cove Road just past the High Hampton Inn. Continue for 3 miles until you cross a bridge. Pull off to the right just past the bridge.

Silver Run Falls
- This 40 foot cascade falls into a beautiful pool of cool mountain water. Follow Hwy. 107 South approximately 3 miles from Cashiers. On your left you will pass the Household Depository. Follow the signs. Park off to the left side of the road and take the short trail to the falls. Silver Run Falls is a favorite!

Bridal Veil Falls
- This waterfall is located 2.7 miles past Highlands on Hwy. 64 West heading toward Franklin. It's located on the right side of the road. For many years the original highway was routed behind this fall and you could drive right behind it! However, recently a huge boulder fell from above blocking the road. Luckily, no one was sightseeing at the time!

Dry Falls
- Also located on Hwy. 64 West, 3.6 miles from Highlands. Parking will be on the left, so look for the sign and be ready to cross the highway. There is a short walk down stairs that take you into the Cullasaja River Gorge. The path will lead you behind this spectacular waterfall. Don't take the name of these falls literally, because you will get misted as you walk underneath this massive, rather thunderous fall!

Upper & Lower Cullasaja Falls - From Dry Falls continue on hwy. 3.3 miles and pull off to left onto gravel for view of upper falls. Continue on hwy. 2.4 miles and pull off to left onto blacktop for view of lower falls.

King Creek Falls
- From Walhalla drive north 9.5 miles on SC 28 to the junction of SC 107. Bear right, north, on SC 107. Drive 10.4 miles and turn left onto Burrells Ford Road (FS 708). Drive approximately 3 miles to the parking area on the left. Hike the Chattooga Trail and follow it 0.3 miles past the last campsite. Take the first left by the bank of creek. Proceed 250 yards and cross over the creek bridge. Turn left onto the trail, climb the wooden steps, and proceed to the falls. King Creek Falls are a little difficult to find, but well worth the trip! Another favorite is Issaqueena Falls in SC nearby.

Note: Although these waterfalls are beautiful, they can also be very dangerous. Hiking near the top of waterfalls is not recommended. Please treat them with great respect.

State Parks

Enjoy rare and unique species, river gorges, waterfalls, hiking and much more. Pack a picnic lunch and rediscover all that nature has to offer. Remember to bring cameras and/or video equipment and stop at the parks office for a map.
State Parks

Gorges State Park - Plunging waterfalls, rugged river gorges, sheer rock walls and one of the greatest concentrations of rare and unique species in the eastern United States are found within Gorges State Park. An elevation that rises 2,000 feet in only four miles, combined with rainfall in excess of 80 inches per year, creates a temperate rain forest and supports a collection of waterfalls.

Dupont State Forest - Located 40 miles southwest of Asheville near Brevard. This 10,000-acre North Carolina state forest is home to 900 miles of hiking trails. A 3-mile roundtrip hike (mostly level) takes you to three beautiful waterfalls. From the parking area, take a short walk to Hooker Falls. Turn around and go past the parking area and follow the creek upstream to the more impressive Triple Falls and High Falls. Take the side trails down to the base of each waterfall - take some wine or lunch with you for a picnic. At the base of High Falls, there is a fallen tree by a big boulder, perfect seating for two. All trails are very well marked.
